Collar & Harness Care
Nylon Collar care
To keep vibrant colours bright you can set the colour using the following easy to prepare solution.
- Mix 1 part room temp water, 1 part white vinegar, 1 tsp salt.
- Soak for 30 min – 1 hour.
- Take out, rinse with cold water, and lay flat to dry. This should keep the color vibrant!
Washing:
To wash your nylon collar we recommend using a delicates garment bag in the washing machine, or to handwash your collar in a sink with dish soap. Be sure you lay the collar flat to dry. *Note some colours may bleed when they get wet for extended periods, be sure to dry them completely before putting back on your dog.*
The hardware(O-ring, triglide and D-ring) are Nickle plated. If left out or if it gets wet for extended periods they can rust over time and have natural wear.
Fraying:
Over time nylon can start to show the wear and tear. To get rid of fraying or a loose string all you will need is a lighter! Quickly run a flame from the lighter over the edge of your collar. Move the flame quickly to avoid leaving burn marks on your collar. If you have an orange or hot pink collar please note that colors may change under the flame but should return back to its normal color after a period of time.
Harness Washing:
The process is actually quite simple, but there are a few cautions to keep in mind:
- It is best to begin with the harness on a flat surface, leaving open to visible inspection.
- Using a moist sponge, wipe down the harness to remove excess dirt and dust.
- Mix a cleaning solution using laundry detergent or dish soap. DO NOT use any cleansers that contain chlorine, bleach, or abrasives.
- Dip your sponge into the solution and thoroughly scrub each portion of the harness until a thick lather forms.
- Using a sponge dipped in CLEAR water, wipe down the harness to remove the soap residue.
- Let the harness dry in room temperature air. DO NOT use a dryer or expose the harness to long periods of sun-drying.
- When cleaning multiple harnesses, hang them to dry so they are not overlapping, always make sure harnesses are thoroughly dry before storing in any closed containers.
- Never use gasoline or other ‘drying solvents’ to clean harnesses.
And the two most important cautions:
- Dampen but DO NOT SOAK the harness. The excessive expansion of the fibers by soaking (and the contraction by drying) can compromise the fabric’s effectiveness and shorten the harness’s life span.
- NEVER put a harness in the dryer. Excessive heat and tumbling can (and will) damage the harness.
If you follow these basics, and combine them with a thorough inspection every now and again you will do much to preserve your harness’s function and ability to make the most of its working life.
